03 Mar The rise of the runcation – and our very own adventure of a lifetime
Have you ever pulled your trainers on and hopped out for a quick tour of whatever city you’re holidaying in?
Grabbing a quick run while on holiday is hardly a new thing, but it’s safe to say that more organised ‘runcations’ are on the rise.
Combining adventure, a hefty dose of fun, and a heavy helping of challenge, this is a travel trend that people are literally running to sign-up to.
Indeed, hospitality giant Accor’s 2025 Travel Trend Report revealed it saw a 50 per cent increase in searches for ‘workout holidays’ over the past year.
What is so great about such trips, including our very own Capital to Country Multi-Day Ultra through Nepal, is that they combine adventure and challenge with an opportunity for participants to discover who they truly are.
From full-on races to running retreats or run tours on city breaks, there are a whole host of ‘runcation’ activities people can take advantage of as they seek new experiences with like-minded people.
Runcations redefine what downtime looks like, with many people becoming increasingly keen to find meaning in their life and activities. Longevity, wellness and self-optimisation are more than buzzwords.
They truly represent a chance to step away from the daily grind and do something special.
Our very own runcation – The Capital to Country Multi-Day Ultra
This stunning race sees participants run through the mesmerising Nepalese foothills with the mountains as their backdrop.
A self-sufficient, 120-mile race over five days, Capital to Country been described as a cross between two of the top ultra races on the planet: The Marathon des Sables and the Ultra-Trial du Mont-Blanc.
It offers entrants the chance to immerse themselves in the culture of Nepal, as well as presenting them with a genuine physical challenge in a unique environment.
Starting with a visit to the World Heritage Site of the Monkey Temple or Swayambhunath in the west of Kathmandu City, this trip of a lifetime also includes time in the historic town of Sanku and Kathmandu itself.
Following jeep tracks cut in the hillsides, runners will pass through incredible tree covered hills and past breathtaking drops.
The journey takes in a diverse mixture of towns and villages, travelling into areas tourists don’t normally see and passing jaw-dropping temples and holy sites, panoramas of lush vegetation, and snow-capped peaks.
This is a race which is more than worth the steep ascents it traverses through, and comes with the extra advantage of being truly sustainable and providing a boost to what is a precious local economy.
