“I’ve done many ultras before in the UK, and one abroad, and this is like nothing else!”
Those were the words of ultra marathoner Michelle Purnell last month after she completed our five-day adventure across Nepal, the Capital to Country Multi-Day Ultra.
It’s a run which covers 123-miles, winding its way through the foothills of the Himalayas. Described by a previous participant as a cross between The Marathon des Sables and the Ultra-Trial du Mont-Blanc, Capital to Country takes in a diverse mix of towns and villages, some jaw-dropping temples and holy sites, and panoramas of lush vegetation and snow-capped peaks.
In November, Michelle was one of five runners who took on the event, alongside Becky McWass, Julia Boyd, Rosalba Fazio and Nino Atria.
During the trip they enjoyed stunning views of snow-capped mountains, sun that was sometimes bordering on the too hot, chilly mornings, and camping while tourists sleep nearby in a grand hotel.
I’ve been lucky enough to have completed some iconic ultra marathons around the world myself, including the infamous Marathon des Sables.
So, to be able to put on a run like Capital to Country, and watch other runners experience the pain and pleasure that only a multi-day ultra can bring is a privilege.
On completing the event, Michelle told us: “My character has been built. It is a really, really beautiful place. It’s so hard to describe it.
“It’s been a wonderful few days. I’m not sure I would want to do it again – I’m not sure my body ever wants to do it again!
“But it was amazing. I would definitely recommend it as an adventure.”
