We’ve all got to the end of a finishing line, panting and pained, ruminating on how the crazy thing we’ve just completed is the toughest race we’ve ever done.
But what about those truly gruelling ultra marathons that can be found across the world that make every sinew scream?
I was fascinated to read this story in ‘BroBible’ charting the 13 longest and hardest races out there.
From the infamous Barkley Marathons to the Self-Transcendence 3,100 Mile Race, which requires runners to travel 3,100 miles round four blocks of New York, these are races to make even the most hardened ultra runners reach for their Vaporflys and return to road racing.
Even my own biggest challenge – and the race that brought about my proudest running moment, the dreaded Marathon des Sables doesn’t make the list.
For those wondering the 13 races chosen by BroBible’s Connor Toole are the Barkley Marathons, Badwater 135, The Jungle Ultra, The Tunnel in Bath, La Ultra, the Dragon’s Back, Moab 240, Last Man Standing, The Spine, the Yukon Arctic Ultra, the 6633 Arctic Ultra, Iditarod Invitational, and the SelfTranscendence 3,100.
It’s a group of races designed to make you shudder, with a few British events littered throughout – although I’m happy to say not one of our Go Beyond Challenge runs!
