Dirt Run 2: Brigstock Country Park brings mud, glorious mud… and equally impressive times

It’s a beautiful sight for a true trail runner. Mud and puddles as far as the eyes can see.

The first ever Brigstock Dirt Run didn’t disappoint on Sunday, as the spectacular route threw up plenty of challenges but also some impressive performances.

Runners were treated to views of the historic Grade 1 listed Lyvden New Bield as they made their way round the 7.5k and 15k routes.

The event followed close on the heels of our always popular Irchester Dirt Run, and is planned to be the second race in what we hope will soon be a Dirt Run Series that spreads across Northamptonshire.

The runs which really get me most excited are those which take place in our ‘own backyard,’ helping to boost the Northamptonshire economy and make the county a more attractive place.

I’ve always loved how Irchester Dirt Run is such a fun event at heart. You can’t take yourself too seriously when wading through all the mud that the course so regularly attracts.

That’s why I’m really keen to expand this format and create a Dirt Run Series. Brigstock was the first step in this process and Sunday’s race lived up to expectations… as the below video sent to us by Keren Irving demonstrates.

7.5km race

Jason Bishop and Adrian Matthews came second and third in the men's 7.5km race

Our new 7.5km race was won by Ross Brown (pictured at the top of this article), who completed a unique double by winning at both Dirt Run rounds 1 and 2 after taking first place in the 5k race at Irchester.

Canicross racer Lisa Pask, assisted by super speedy spaniel Charlie, came second overall, with Jason Bishop coming third (second in the men’s race).

Kelly Wedge was the first non-dog aided woman home, finishing fourth in all, with Sophie Green just behind her in fifth place overall. Adrian Matthews, in sixth overall, completed the men’s podium while Paula Thomas was the third woman home (eighth overall).

15k RACE

Jason French, centre, came first in the 15km race

The 15k race was won by Jason French, in the formidable time of 1:03:59. Jason was another who had featured in the Irchester event, where he came second over the same distance.

Jack Chennell finshed second at Brigstock, with Antonio Fischer coming third. Antonio was yet another who had tasted success in Irchester, winning the 10k race there.

The women’s 15k was won by Kairit Fitzgerald, who came eighth overall, while Hannah Jones and Joy Shatford made up the podium in second and third respectively.
